What is this exciting new "real-world” curriculum which is not taught in high schools and colleges but adds to the "S" in modern STEM education? Analytical Metrology!


What Is Analytical Metrology?


  • A measurement-centric, data driven, chemical science at the intersection of analytical chemistry and metrology – a real-world modernization and treatment that transcends the breadth of traditional analytical chemistry.


  • Calibration and related metrological concepts intertwined into fundamental analytical chemistry instrumentation and methodology that help ensure the reliability, trustworthiness, and defensibility of today's chemical testing results in real-world scenarios.


Why Is Analytical Metrology Important?


  • Drastically under-utilized in the real world due to the overwhelming shortage of managers, technicians and analysts which have the knowledge and awareness of this hybrid chemical science.


  • Provides the infrastructural backbone and appropriate calibration schemes for nearly every scientific measurement scenario in the real world to improve the likelihood of meaningful testing outcomes and their ramifications in the scientific measurement community.

Instrumentation and Chemical Analysis

Analytical metrology is integral to many aspects of measurement science and instrumentation. 


When we want to gain chemical composition information about a sample or artifact, we usually lean upon three (3) different but related branches of analytical measurement science: 


  • Qualitative Analysis - What is it?
  • Quantitative Analysis - How much of it is present?
  • Structural Analysis - How are the atoms arranged in the molecule?


The analytical instrumentation selected to acquire this information depends on the type of chemical analysis and the class of chemical species.


Our chemical composition measurements may occur anywhere:


  • Laboratory - sample or artifact is collected and transported to the laboratory
  • Process - sample or artifact is analyzed often in real time at its occurring site
  • Field - sample or artifact is sampled and analyzed at the site using portable instrumentation
  • Remote - sample or artifact is interrogated at a distance usually with a laser


The analytical metrology that is relevant depends on the measurement scenario and the instrumentation used in the measurement. For the measurement results to be valid and scientifically defensible, the data integrity must be ensured by using the appropriate means, principles and concepts of analytical metrology.
